the journey is quickly coming to an end with only one day left. the johnstones are in east london spending the day with fatima's sister and her family. meanwhile, the plan for the mahmood's is to drive over the border into south africa and head to kimberley. it is possible that they may continue onward to beaufort west so stay tuned to the finale of this most exciting journey. tomorrow, the johnstones will meet up again with the mahmoods to pour the water of the arabian gulf into the oceans off the coast of cape town, symbolically ending their long journey. friends from south africa have been in contact with the families and are eagerly waiting for their arrival.
5:00pm: the mahmood family crossed into south africa yesterday and spent last night in kimberley at the mookadam residence. today they went to see the "big hole" which is the famous diamond mine in kimberley. the "big hole" is the largest hand-dug excavation in the world and is 215 metres deep. the mine was suspended in 1914 after 22.5 million tons of earth had been excavated and 2722kg of diamonds had been found. special thanks to shireen and her son shoaib who took them around town. the girls also went to the talking hair salon to get new hairstyles and are looking good for tomorrow's special ending. after reading jummah salaat and having a wonderful lunch at the mookadam's, the mahmoods headed on the m12 to beaufort west. depending on the time, they may continue on to paarl. they are feeling a bit sad that the end is near and said "we can still do another 40 days!".
the plan for tomorrow is to meet 2:00pm at sea point lighthouse near cape town, for the journey's end. |
