9:30pm: the mahmood family spend the day exploring the kilwa area and went to the island of kilwa kisiwani. kilwa kisiwani was once the most famous trading post in east africa. starting from the 9th century the wealth of the city grew with the trade of ivory, slaves, gold, iron, jewelry and spices. by the 13th century, kilwa became the most powerful city on the east african coast. in 1331, ibn batuta visited kilwa and described the city as "large and elegant. tapestries and ornamental riches covered the walls and the floors were carpeted." many buildings were "embellished with cut stone decorative borders framing the entranceway".
