the earliest visitors to zanzibar were arab traders who arrived in the 8th century. remains of a mosque at kizimkazi from 1107 can still be seen. the arabs were from oman and traded primarily in ivory, slaves and spices. in 1832, sultan seyyid syed moved his sultanate from muscat to zanzibar where his descendants ruled the mainland coast from mozambique to somalia for over 130 years.
9:00pm: today was a day of discovery and exploring the "fantastic, absolutely magical" and "fascinating" island of zanzibar. sailing on a dhow, mushtaq and shehzad went on two dives off the shores of bawi island. they saw turtles and other marine life but were disappointed at the amount of coral bleaching which occurs when the coral reefs die. compared to their first trip to zanzibar four years ago, they saw a dramatic decline in the coral reefs and were very saddened. while they were diving the rest of the mahmood family relaxed on the beach while romana when snorkeling. the johnstone family explored the island and its beautiful scenery. they walked the old ancient arab alleyways in stone town and went on a spice tour in the north of the island. unfortunately, both johnstone girls fell ill with travelers diarrhea after eating something that did not agree with them and had to recuperate. for dinner, the rest enjoyed large lobsters fresh from the ocean. they also listened to traditional zanzibari music called bashrafee.
