 10:00am: for the next two days, the group will be enjoying dar es salaam on the swahili coast. dar es salaam means 'haven of peace' and is a bustling city which revolves around the huge harbour where traditional dhows sail in and offload the night's catch of fresh fish. the city was once under the rule of sultan seyyid majid of zanzibar but after his death in 1870, the german east african company established dar es salaam as it's administrative centre. during world war I, the british gained control and in 1961, tanzania gained its independence. a varied past that is reflected in the city's architecture.
