details

10:00am: after a good night's sleep at the impala hotel, the group went to explore the city of arusha and shop for tanzanite, a unique blueish-purple gemstone that is found only in tanzania. later, they will be heading to the town of moshi which is the base for those who want to climb mount kilimanjaro. moshi is the coffee producing centre of tanzania and vast coffee plantations cover the area around town and on the slopes of kilimanjaro. mount kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in africa and stands over 19000 feet above sea level. it is an extinct volcano and the top is covered with ice. unfortunately, global warming is melting the ice cap and at the current alarming rate, it is calculated that the ice cap will disappear by 2020. mushtaq climbed mount kilimanjaro in 1997 with his best friend.

10:30pm: after arusha, the group went to see marangu falls on the way to moshi. their hotel, mountain inn is a nice hotel at the foot of kilimanjaro. they had a spectacular view at sunset when they went as far as the first base for climbers. tomorrow they will head eastward to the indian ocean and the swahili coast.
