details

home base 9:00am: the group got a good night sleep after spending the night in a hut in the village of gallabat. the hut was well built, clean, made of straw and provided protection against the rain.  it was large enough for both families, had one door and no windows. this made it warm and cosy inside. outside, the terrain has become lush and the temperature has cooled down. a very nice change from the heat and dust from a few days earlier. it rained this morning causing the roads to become slippery and they are driving carefully towards the ethiopian border. abdullah is back at the wheel of the buraq after recovering from his injury from yesterday.

home base 11:30am: the group has just crossed the ethiopian border and are heading to gonder. the temperature is a very pleasant 21 degrees, compared to the hot 40 degrees they experienced in meroe and khartoum.

home base 11:00pm: today at the border, the group was stuck for 4 hours as officials took their time to process everything. once through, they drove  through the simien mountains, a world heritage site. the scenery was beautiful as high plateaus were seperated by deep valleys and dramatic peaks all around. along the way, they had their first tire puncture. once in gonder, they will be staying the night at the belegaz pension. they were not the only foreigners in gonder and the mahmoods had dinner with sophie and hays. they are students from oxford and leeds in britain who are also travelling in africa.
