details

home base 1:15pm june26: yesterday, the trekkers had a strenuous 12 hour drive from port sudan to atbara via al-hayya, covering 425 km. stopping to refuel midway, it was a long, hot journey on a dirt track. in atbara, they stayed in the dusty but clean nile hotel. the trekkers headed off to see the pyramids of meroe this morning. after the pyramids, they will be driving to khartoum, the capital city of sudan.

home base 9:00pm: the group arrived safely in khartoum after a very nice day visiting the historical site of meroe. these pyramids were built by the cushite people of ancient sudan

(590 BC to 350 AD) to house the bodies of departed kings. the day was hot but the site was "absolutely wonderful" and definetly worth the visit. after making the first crossing over the nile river, they followed the river to khartoum for the night. tomorrow will be another hot day with the temperature reaching 40 degrees celsius.
